Children learn best when they are actively engaged, curious, and having fun. At The Goddard School of Swedesboro, New Jersey, the outdoor classroom and play area are thoughtfully designed to make sure that learning continues the moment children step outside. This is more than a playground, it is a structured, nature-rich learning environment where every element has a purpose.
The outdoor classroom features multiple Nesting Table and Chair Sets that allow the entire class to gather outside for lessons, projects, or small-group activities. This dedicated learning space helps teachers seamlessly transition from indoor instruction to outdoor exploration, reinforcing concepts in a new, engaging setting.
Nearby, a Trellis, Green Wall Planters, and Half Pizza Gardens invite children to learn about horticulture. Here, they can plant seeds, tend to growing plants, and discover where their food comes from. As children observe roots, stems, leaves, and flowers over time, they gain firsthand experience with life cycles, responsibility, and the basics of environmental stewardship.
To support creative expression, the outdoor classroom includes multiple Double Sided Art Easels, each equipped with cup holders for paint, water, and brushes. When inspiration strikes, children have a dedicated space to experiment with color, texture, and form. These easels transform the outdoors into an open-air art studio, allowing children to:
Develop fine motor skills while painting and drawing
Explore cause and effect as they mix colors
Express emotions and ideas through creative work
Educators can easily connect art activities to science, literacy, and nature themes, enriching the overall learning experience.
A Basic Weather Station panel gives children the chance to explore and talk about the daily conditions they experience. By observing wind direction, temperature, and other elements, children build early science skills and vocabulary, and teachers can tie these observations into discussions about seasons, climate, and how weather affects plants and people.
The outdoor stage, paired with benches that face it, creates a natural gathering place. Children can put on performances, engage in imaginative play, or present what they have learned to their peers. Teachers can also use the stage to focus children’s attention in one direction during group lessons or storytelling. This space supports:
Language development and public speaking
Confidence and self-expression
Cooperative play and turn-taking
One of the most unique features is the tri-directional trough system. Children can watch as water flows along different paths, carrying small objects along the way and eventually collecting in a small table with a pool. By adjusting objects in the troughs or blocking water, children see in real time how their choices affect the movement of water.
The outdoor classroom also includes a variety of freestanding musical play instruments. These components encourage children to explore rhythm, sound, and pattern. As they play together, children practice cooperation, listening, and turn-taking, while also developing auditory discrimination and early musical skills.
The space includes two shade structures (in the images above, the fabric was removed from the shade frame to keep the fabric in top shape during wintery, snowy months) to help protect children and staff from the sun and create more comfortable play and learning conditions throughout the day. Due to wintery weather forecasted for the area, the shade fabrics were proactively removed. This preventative step helps protect the fabric and structural integrity of the shades from potential damage caused by extreme weather. Once conditions improve, the shade fabric can be reinstalled so children can continue to enjoy the space comfortably and safely.
From horticulture and art to weather observation, music, and water play, the outdoor classroom at The Goddard School of Swedesboro is intentionally planned to support a wide range of learning opportunities. In this structured environment, children can:
Explore how things work in nature
Understand where their food comes from
Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Build social, emotional, physical, and cognitive abilities
By blending nature, play, and purposeful design, this outdoor classroom continues to foster children’s curiosity and love of learning, one discovery at a time.
